Harold D. Johnson, 98, formerly of rural Akron and Chicago, Illinois passed at 7:15 pm, Monday, May 17, 2021 at Hickory Creek of Rochester, Indiana. Harold was born on May 28, 1922 in Chicago, Ill. to the late Edward and E. Edna (Johnson) Johnson. He married on June 14, 1952 to Margaret Vurum, she preceded him in death in 1988. He and his companion Geraldine Denning moved to Akron over 20 years ago. Gerry preceded him in death on Aug. 19, 2013. Harold graduated from Tippecanoe High School. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942 to 1945. Harry had been in construction working in the sheet metal industry. He was a member of the Sheet Metal Workers' Local 73 of Hillside, Ill. He was a very good woodworker and builder. Harold was always a very giving and friendly person. He was a lifetime member of the NRA. He was an active giver to the Salvation Army, various Animal Shelters, and to Disabled Veterans. He was known to be an active person and enjoyed joking around. He spent many mornings walking on the trails in Rochester and frequenting Casey’s to socialize. Harold is survived by his niece Linda and husband Dennis Bobson of Mishawaka, a half sister Betty Biser, and many friends and close neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Margaret, companion Gerry, and a brother Melvin Johnson. A private service will be held at Hartzler Funeral Home 305 West Rochester Street Akron, Indiana. Memorials can be made in Harold’s memory to the Fulton County Animal Adoption And Education Center 1540 N Wentzel Street Rochester, Indiana 46975.
