Fred R. McGlothin, 85, 1779 S. Sweetgum Road, Rochester, passed away at 9:20 p.m. Friday at Hickory Creek of Rochester. Born Aug. 6, 1926, in Clear Creek, Va., he was the son of Fred L. and Ada Belle (Huff) McGlothin. On Feb. 14, 1948, in Rochester, he married Rosemary (Holloway) McGlothin. She passed away April 30, 2002. He was a Journeyman Electrician, retiring from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 153. Fred was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II. While in the Army, he served in the Philippines and Japan and received several medals including Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Occupation Medal of Japan, Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1343, the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post 36 and the Eagles Aerie 825, all of Rochester. Fred was an avid IU basketball and Cubs baseball fan. During his earlier years, he enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and tending to his garden. Fred was also known for his wine making skills. Survivors include four daughters, Carol and husband Mike Bright, Connie S. Mitchell, Diana and husband Bob McGriff, and Brenda and husband Donn Kale, all of Rochester; two sons, Fred A. McGlothin, and Jim and wife Kim McGlothin, both of Rochester; one sister, Ella and husband John Richards, of Crescent City, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, John Ray McGlothin; one daughter-in-law, Pam Lowe; two brothers, John C. and Woody; and five sisters, Bertie, Pearl, Elsie, Ellis and Joy. Services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Chris Beall officiating. Burial will take place in Salem Cemetery, southwest of Rochester, where graveside military rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 1343 and the LeRoy Shelton American Legion Post 36, of Rochester. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. today at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron. Memorial contributions may be made to Hope Hospice of Fulton County, P.O. Box 621, Rochester, IN 46975.
